Bossa Nova, Samba, Choro, Baiao, Partido Alto, Maracatu, Afoxe, Frevo, Samba Funk…the grooves keep coming north with their infectious rhythms that propel the music and inspire jazz musicians to widen their rhythmic scope. Since the late 1950’s Bossa Nova and Samba have made a home in the jazz scene. Now there are other rhythms that are taking root in jazz performance. You will study the rhythmic foundations by playing percussion instruments and then applying that knowledge to our guitars. Classic repertoire will be our starting point (Pixinguina, Ary Barroso, Dorival Caymmi, Joao Gilberto, Luis Bonfa, Baden Powell, Tom Jobim), then you will move to modern interpretations (Toninho Horta, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Joao Bosco, Hermeto Pascual). Our study of traditional rhythms and classic songs will be the basis of original jazz arrangements and compositions by each student to be performed at the end of the workshop.
